BA, MPhil
Pia Regensburger is a first-year DPhil student at Oriel College working under the supervision of Professor Hindy Najman and Professor Mark Wynn. She has previously completed an MPhil in Theology (distinction) and a BA in Theology and Religion (First-Class Honours) at the university of Oxford.
Her doctoral research will explore the philosophical complexity of naming God and referring to the divine in ancient Judaism and beyond, with the overall aim of identifying, reconstructing and elucidating ancient philosophical assumptions about names and naming. Working at the crossroads of biblical studies, Jewish studies and philosophy, Pia seeks to explore the contested subject of the divine name by bringing together the parallel yet isolated insights of distinct academic fields.
Pia has received several awards for her work in Hebrew Bible studies, including most recently the 2025 Taube Prize for Student Writing in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, the 2024 postgraduate essay prize from the British and Irish Association for Jewish Studies, and the 2024 Hall-Houghton Septuagint Prize for outstanding work on the Septuagint.
